STUDIO DEL PRESENTE: ATTO PRIMO
Installation, Exhibition
Ifö Center, Bromölla, 2020
STUDIO DEL PRESENTE is a continuing to an ongoing investigation into the ever-changing. Its antecedent STUDIO DEL FRAGILE began the conversation by emphasizing the noticeable fragility of the inventions of the man. Showcasing the cracks appearing in the surfaces presented, the audience was invited to experience the subtle, almost mundane happenings leading to the inevitable and the now clear beginning of the end. We now know we and everything around us slowly, but steadily is going to become one with the masses.
Disruption has happened. The cracks are there.
What is next? How will mankind consciously adjust and eventually adapt to the disrupted existence of today?
In the present our existence is finite, that is clear. Talks about moving to Mars have become less of a joke and more of a not-so-distant reality. Through constant innovation and overuse of resources we have melded with nature. Everything man-made has an expiration date, as does man itself. We realize we should make the best out of our time on Earth.
This exhibition expresses how humanity and nature coexist and interact with each other through time and constant change. We tend to forget to what extent humanity and nature are connected. We are nature and nature is us.
The artist, through the installation, both inside and outside the exhibition space, seeks to enhance the relation and parallels between the artificial and natural.
The exhibition encourages direct human interaction. The exhibited pieces slowly decay through the footprint and touch of the visitors, mimicking the role of humanity on planet Earth. Everything we touch alters or disappears - who’s to say if for better or for worse. Engage with the art and watch it change before your eyes. A few small steps, a couple of fingerprints, that’s all it takes.
Unlike when working with STUDIO DEL FRAGILE, where the material of choice was concrete and clay, STUDIO DEL PRESENTE features the use of rammed earth. This technique has been used in construction for thousands of years. Examples mostly found in China, this method was applied in the creation of sustainable and strong builds, such as the Great Wall of China.
Curiously enough, through this project, the technique is used to achieve the opposite reaction. Through mostly using the base elements of sand and soil and little to no binding (such as clay) and encouraging visitors to physically interact with the pieces exhibited, the artist further presents his vision of the ultimate decay.
