NON MATERIAL APPROPRIATION
Material research, Object, Exhibition
Tina Austen Gallery, Copenhagen, 2021
A material research spacing to nonvisual senses. The recreation (and loss) of environmental aesthetics through appropriating a coast’s local materials.
A contact microphone is recording the vibrations of a shovel extracting clay from Sjællands Odde`s coast, the human sound of molding and mending, the resonance of heat rising in the kiln. This is the act of material appropriation in its sonic representation, captured from its origin throughout its transformation.
The physical and auditory pieces enclose the re-created memory of its site of origin. After the collection of stones from the beach, a fictitious portion of the ground was recreated in the studio and its imprint cast.
At high temperature the appropriated material loses its aesthetics and formal features entirely, letting nature dictate the outcome. The material keeps cracking and resisting the new form given, even months after being fired.
This project has to be approached as material and sensory research through a fun collaboration between friends from different fields.
